Good old brute force and ignorance in place of more refined techniques has finally seen the bike relieved of its stuck seat post. That's another hurdle out of the way.
I was advised by a guy in a bearing shop that the Ammonia trick would likely lead to an eaten out frame, so the heat trick was next on the list, but the machinist reckoned that if the seatpost wasn't as important as the frame, then the application of BFI was the way forward, and so it was.
